Do you always have an excuse that trumps your trip to the gym? We know that the universe doesn’t revolve around the Zumba or boot camp class schedule, but there is no excuse for ditching your fitness just because you’d rather whine than workout. Fitness expert Krista Knee, owner of Flirty Girl Fitness, knows life can get in the way of exercise, but she also knows there are easy ways to fit physical activity into your schedule. Knee says, “No more excuses, here’s how to counter them and kick start your fitness.”
Top 5 excuses for skipping exercise and ways to get around them
Here are Knee’s list of the top five exercise complaints and how to “get over it” and get moving.
1. “It’s too expensive.”
Knee doesn’t let budget stand in the way of exercise. She says, “When it comes to working out, there are plenty of affordable options aside from a fancy gym.”
Budget-friendly workouts include:
- Hiking in the great outdoors,
- Joining an intramural team sport like volleyball or softball,
- Working out with groups or clubs (Check out MeetUp.com or Facebook for local groups),
- Workout DVDs so you can exercise at home,

2. “I don’t know where to start.”
It’s easy to exercise. Just start by walking around the block, getting on your bike, or better yet, take a deep breath and join a fitness facility that caters to women, recommends Knee, who started Flirty Girl Fitness, an all-women’s gym. “Joining an all woman’s gym is much less intimidating then joining a co-ed facility and often women’s-only facilities are designed to foster a supportive environment and community approach to working out – you’ll get the support and encouragement you need while fostering and socializing with women who all share a common goal-to look and feel great,” she adds. Regardless of how you start, the key is starting now, not later.
3. “I’m too busy, I don’t have time.”
This is one the most common excuses Knee hears from women and she doesn’t buy into it a bit. “Busy or not, we all need to find the time to be active – it’s a necessary step for us to all look and feel our very best,” says the fitness expert. “We aren’t asking you to take the time to train for a marathon (we certainly aren’t discouraging it, either!), but you do need to find the time every day for exercise, such as small circuit workouts in your family room or bedroom, a brisk walk around the block, some basic pushups and jumping jacks when you get up in the morning or better yet, a session with a trainer or a group exercise class are great places to get started.” The payoff? “When you’re healthy and active you’re more productive and efficient because you have more energy – we promise if you find the time to exercise it will end up saving you time in the long run!”
4. “I’m in too much pain after I workout, it’s not worth it.”
Slow and steady wins the race, says Knee. So instead of over-exercising, start off slower and easier. Your fitness will progressively improve and you’ll feel more enthused to do it because you won’t be in pain. “Being knowledgeable on the proper exercises to do when you’re first starting out is half of the battle, so try low-impact exercises initially and don’t feel the need to push it too hard from the get-go,” Knee explains. “The goal is to start a healthy routine, not injure yourself! Go low and slow to build up your tolerance, once you find yourself feeling stronger up the ante a little and push yourself to do a bit more.”
5. “I’m too tired.”
You must expend energy to get energy. “After a long day or work, hitting the gym or taking an exercise class is generally the last thing that you want to do, but the more you work out the more you’ll want to work out,” encourages Knee. “Exercise boasts a ton of benefits besides looking great — it boosts your energy, creates more serotonin, and combats illness and disease, among numerous other benefits.”
