Sweet and Spicy Tortilla Chips

January 3, 2011 |  by  |  recipes

A tasty go-to for vegan snacking, these sweet, warmly spiced tortilla chips satisfy the craving for sweet, salty, and crunchy. Dip vegan chips in a non-dairy sour cream or fresh guacamole and you’ll meet the need for creamy, too. To add to the sweetness, pair them with a fruit salsa. As a bonus, these vegan snack chips are easy to bake (and hard to resist).

Sweet and Spicy Tortilla Chips

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 (8-inch) whole grain tortillas
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons vegan margarine, melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (more or less to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. and spray a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
  2. Brush both sides of tortillas and place on the baking sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, combine salt, brown sugar, cayenne, and cinnamon.
  4. Sprinkle half of the spice mixture over chips, flip chips, and sprinkle with remaining mixture.
  5. Bake for 6 minutes or until chips are just golden and crisp.

  1. Good recipe for playoffs and superbowl games!

  2. My kids LOVE these chips — and they are so much healthier than the deep-fried “dessert” chips you get at some fast-food joints.

  3. Cinnamon adds a nice touch. Never would have thought to combine the two.

  4. Decidedly edible. I added a pinch each of garlic and onion powder, reduced sugar to 1.5 tsp, reduced the salt, and added some smoked paprika. I tasted one, and it was pretty yummy. I sprinkled some nutritional yeast on top, and they tasted quite like Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos. I’m going to do some more tweaking to make them taste more like Doritos.
